ANNOUNCEMENT – Eat the Olympics supper club

7 Jun

ETO Supper Club

Eat the Olympics Supper Club
28 July – 11 August
London, W10 (venue to be revealed on purchase of ticket)

In January 2012 we (Jack Hemingway and Sarah Kemp) embarked on an Olympic culinary challenge – to eat a dish from every single country taking part in the London 2012 games.

We were quick out of the blocks, completing thirty dishes in the first two weeks but this is a marathon not a sprint and in recent times we have been somewhat off the pace. The recent purchase of our Queens Park flat slowed things down and it now sits empty while we await planning permission.

With the help of our crafty fingered friends and family we have transformed the space into our very own Olympic themed pop-up restaurant. Now we need your help to make it over the final hurdle before the summer is out and Olympic Games have left town.

Over three weekends during the London 2012 Olympic Games, we invite you to join us at our Eat the Olympic Supper Club where will host six events each covering a different continent. We will be cooking a starter, main course and desert with a cheeky cocktail on arrival each from four different countries within the chosen continent.

It wouldn’t be an Olympic themed supper club without an element of competition so diners are encouraged (but not obliged) to join the fun and contribute to the evening’s entertainment by supplying a home cooked appetiser to accompany the three course meal. Not only will contributors save £10 from the suggested donation but also be in the running to take home the gold medal as fellow diners sample the culinary creations before votes are cast and medals awarded.

At the end of the evening diners will also get to decide the fate of each dish cooked by Jack and Sarah by choosing to award it Gold, Silver, Bronze or the dreaded disqualified based on their enjoyment of the meal.

Bookings are now open for the following dates:

West Indies – Saturday 28th July 7pm
South America – Sunday 29th July 2pm
Asia – Saturday 4th August 7pm
Middle East – Sunday 5th August 2pm
Central Africa – Friday 10th August 7pm
Europe – Saturday 11th August 7pm

Eat the Olympics – new blog

1 Mar

For the last few weeks, Jack and I have been busy cooking dishes from each of the countries that are taking part in the Olympics this summer. We are bonkers, I know.

We’re four weeks in and we have already completed 45 recipes, not bad going really.

We’d love you to follow us through the highs and lows. I’ll also be sharing each of the recipe images here with you – don’t forget to click through to the Eat the Olympics blog for the recipe. We’d love to hear how they go if you fancy trying them out for yourselves at home.

If you have any suggestions, they are greatly appreciated!

I’ll get you started with one of our first recipes – Piparkakut from Finland. Delicious enjoyed with a cup of tea.

Sarah. x

Vintage at Southbank Centre

12 Jul

Vintage 5

Let me set the scene. My boyfriends family are huge advocates of vintage, whether that be music, fashion, design or films. I met my boyfriend in a field at Bestival in 2007 and I remember thinking that it was cool that his dad and little brother (who was 10 at the time) came for a couple of days. We went back to Bestival for the next couple of years and as we started to see the changes, the way that it was expanding so fast, we decided to give it a miss the following year.

It was the same year that my boyfriends parents had an idea. To encompass everything that they are passionate about and hold their very own festival. A relationship with Goodwood was established and the date was set – August 13th – 15th 2010. See my post on the event last year here.

Anyone that went last year will know how fantastic it was. A high street in a field, post war silver service in The Torch Club, the BEST club venue in the form of The Warehouse and an array of live music to knock the socks off any other live music festival. It wasn’t an event just focusing on music, the weekend played host to the biggest vintage market in the world, a cinema curated by Stephen Woolley, live catwalk shows and lots more.

Vintage 2

This year, they have decided to link with the Southbank Centre and the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain celebrations. Can you think a more perfect fit? From 29th – 31st July, the Royal Festival Hall will be set dressed as you have never seen it before. Its six levels will be transformed into a multi-venue playground where, over 13 hours each day (from 12pm to 1am), pass holders can learn the dances of the decades, take in over 70 live performances, boogie along to the tunes of 150 DJs, enjoy exclusive catwalk shows and decade specific make-overs, sample Vintage food and cocktails, shop at one of world’s most exciting Vintage marketplaces, and get style hunted as Vintage at Southbank Centre calls out for people to glam up.

Vintage 4

And I’m here to tell you about the food aspect, of course. Ticket holders can immerse themselves in the tastes of days gone by with food to fit the music and fashion, and historically linked eating opportunities, not to mention some fantastic period cocktails from the bars. Take for example the North South Divide Pub where Northerners can treat themselves to beef stew and a pint of ale, while Southerners can enjoy pea soup and a glass of Pimms before taking part in outrageous games and sing-along in the specially created boozer. Sneak a ‘Bootleg’ cocktail in the hidden Shhh! 1920s Prohibition club… Be sure not to tell anyone though! Take a break from the afternoon tea dance to sip on a Gin Martini in The Torch club, or kick back and relax with an ‘Alabama Sidecar’ amidst a soundtrack of Tiki and Exotica in the Leisure Lounge. As nightfall descends it’s to time to hit the Style Studio dance floor… But there’s always time for a ‘Cosmo’ before the disco dancing commences. In The Warehouse its paper cups and lager from the tin served from a bar made of pallets; truly authentic. There will be themed and dare we say it, nostalgic nibbles in abundance – think Cheesy Wotsits, Skips and Pork Scratchings (those were the days). For a more substantial feed, head up to the Penthouse terrace where you will find bangers, baps and plenty of ketchup at the Great British summer BBQ.

Skylon will also be getting involved in the Vintage fun. For the Vintage weekend only, the restaurant will be serving a specially created afternoon tea with Vintage inspired cocktails such as ‘Old Fashioned’ and ‘Colony’. Diners can listen to 1920s and 1930s live music and 78s on old Gramophones while they dine at dimly lamp lit tables. I cannot wait to bask in elegance as I sip my martini and nibble on dainty cakes.

If the food offering inside isn’t enough, all 19 restaurants that surround the Royal Festival Hall will be participating. Sip a ‘Papa Dobles’ Daiquiri, which was Ernest Hemingway’s usual tipple in Cuba at Las Iguanas (ticket holders can enjoy 2 for 1 cocktails), a ‘Vintage Bombay Punch’ at the Dishoom Chowpatty Beach Café or maybe you will opt for a 70s soul BBQ at Feng Sushi on the Festival Terrace. The kids can join in too at Yo Sushi, who will be holding hour-long Mini Ninja classes to teach children how to make sushi. 1950s British diner come posh transport caff, Canteen will be serving their renowned range of classic British dishes such as sausages and mash with onion gravy, fish and chips and Scotch eggs. Also on the menu will be a range of pies with seasonal ingredients, encased in delicious buttery pastry. But don’t forget to leave room to delve into a nostalgic British dessert. Options include a decadent treacle tart with clotted cream, crumble with custard, or homemade jelly and ice cream!

I’m writing this to get the food aspect of Vintage out there. Vintage is just as much about the food experience as the music, fashion etc… and I’d LOVE to see some of you there.

Head to www.vintageatsouthbankcentre.co.uk or www.vintagebyhemingway.co.uk for further information and tickets, priced at £60 per day.

Ticket holders can book meals at Skylon by emailing skylonreservations@danddlondon.com

Green & Blacks search for a Taste Assistant

15 Nov

IMG_3918

Have you heard? Green and Blacks have launched a nationwide search to find a brand new Taste Assistant! The lucky candidate will work along Head of Taste, Micah Carr-Hill and will be responsible for developing new flavour combinations for the brand. Sound good? You’ll get to travel the world to source the very best ingredients and devise new products. Is this your idea of a dream job? Then what are you waiting for, enter now!

The job won’t come easy though, Micah is looking for the person that has the ultimate taste buds as well as smell. He’s looking for someone that fully understands the difference between taste and flavour – to enter simply head to www.pieceofgreenandblacks.co.uk. Closing date for entries is 16th December 2010. The successful candidate is expected to take up their role early 2011.

I am a self confessed chocoholic. I can’t go a day without eating at least a teeny bite of the delicious brown stuff. Green & Blacks Creamy Milk is my bar of choice so imagine my delight when I found that Green & Blacks were hosting a bloggers event to coincide with the search for the Taste Assistant.

The event was held at the lovely Miele Gallery in Central London and there were three competitions to take part in on the evening. My boyfriend and I took part in the 15:15 challenge. What is this I hear you cry? We had £15 to spend on ingredients to create any dish that we liked but here’s the catch – we only had 15 minutes to cook it from scratch! There were 9 contestants in total and each person created something incredible in the allocated time. The dishes were judged on the taste element (obvioulsly) and Micah wanted to see great flavour combinations that exploded your taste buds when hitting the mouth. I went for a Lemon and Lime Cheesecake with an Oreo Biscuit Base

and Jack opted for Pan fried Scallops wrapped in Pancetta with Pesto and Capers.

Each contestant had their own cooking station with a helper from the Miele Gallery. It was a little nerve wracking because the guests that weren’t cooking were watching intently!

During the cook off, guests could enter the other two competitions of the evening, both to test the taste buds of course! The first was the ganache test – you had to taste two ganaches and write down as many ingredients as you could decipher. The second test was tasting the flavours that were present in two cocktails.

I have to admit, I realised that my sense of taste isn’t the greatest. I had difficulty figuring out what tastes were present in either. I got a couple right but that’s not nearly enough if I wanted to apply for the role of Taste Assistant. I was too busy cooking and watching others cook to enter the ganache test and by the time I realised, the answers were alreay been looked at! I definitely don’t think I would have come top anyway!

The winner of the cocktail taste test was the lovely Jennifer from Chocolate Ecstacy Tours and the winner of the ganache taste test was the equally as lovely MiMi from Meemalee’s Kitchen.

The dishes from the 15:15 challenge were all lined up and Micah, armed with a fork, set out to try each dish. He gave nothing away as he slowly tasted each dish and moved onto the next. Each contestant stood grinning as he took a mouthful of their creation.

After much deliberation, the winner was announced. Drum roll please…….. MiMi!!! She made a fantastic Japanese dish using linguine with fish roe and wild mushrooms. The flavours were great – I really can’t remember exactly what was in it but it was delicious!

IMG_3906

A round of applause was followed by tears of joy and a quick photoshoot. Doesn’t she look so happy!

IMG_3927

Two more dishes were highly commended – Jennifer’s mille feuille and the rather scrumptious looking piece of beef, which according to Micah was just a little bit too spicy. YUM!

IMG_3907

IMG_3905

The best looking for me though was the fantastic Partridge garnished with Rose petals.

IMG_3904

I had an absolutely fantastic evening and got to walk away with a gift – a Green & Blacks box containing 15 (yes, 15) different bars of Green & Blacks, a bottle of wine, a USB stick and my very own taste test kit. I was happy as larry walking out of there.

IMG_3935

I may not be up to the challenge of Taste Assistant but if you feel like you’ve got what it takes, don’t delay, enter now. You’ll be the envy of millions!!!
